One of the things children need most is boundaries. Children have a sense of security if they are given certain well defined limits. They realize that their parents love them if they are told to stay within those bounds. Inside those boundaries, they are safe. Outside they get into trouble. A good example is found in the casual outlook on sex which is promoted so widely. When children are taught that sex outside of marriage is not the proper thing, they really do listen. Especially if they are taught that this is what God expects from them. Those young people who step across this line may find themselves with an unwanted pregnancy or the consequence of a sexually transmitted disease. Abstaining from sex outside of marriage is good advice.
But some people insist that such thinking is too narrow. So be it. Isn’t the narrow way the best way? Listen to what Jesus Christ says, “Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction. And many are those who enter by it, for the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and few are those who find it” (Matthew 7:13-14). The point is that crossing over the line will catch up with you.
While you live on this earth, you have tremendous opportunities. You can plunge down the broad road which challenges and breaks all the rules of right and wrong. But sooner or later, you will pay. And in eternity, you will pay in a big way. Or you can follow Jesus Christ down the narrow road. This is the road where you trust his death as a sacrifice to cover your sins. You trust his life to save your life. You dedicate yourself to keeping his commandments. Yes, it is a narrow road, but in the end, the rewards are big and eternal.
