“Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
Teach me your paths.”

The Mind of the Spirit

When my wife and I walked down the boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey, there was a reader or fortune teller in almost every block. And when I was in Orlando, Florida, I also saw people advertising themselves as readers and consultants in the supernatural. Why all of this interest? Even though our culture and society is very materialistic and in many ways anti-supernatural, there remains an insatiable hunger to find an authoritative word from God.

But at the same time, there is a tremendous aversion to the Bible. People will avoid the Bible at all costs and go to so called mediums and readers instead. This aversion to the Bible is present within religious circles too. The writings of so called modern day prophets and prophetesses are set along side the Bible. And our attention is subtlety drawn away from the Bible. But if the Bible is not the place we go to find the Word of God, can we really be motivated by the Spirit of God?

Listen to what the Bible itself tells us. “The mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so” (Romans 8:6-7). The “mind set on the flesh” refers to the disposition or inclination of the person without the Holy Spirit of God. Such a person has a disposition which is hostile to God and hostile to His book, the Bible. When such people reject the Bible in favor of readers or consultants or other books, this is evidence that they are without the Holy Spirit of the God of the Bible.
