“Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
Teach me your paths.”

The Bible may be on the top of the best seller list but it remains a closed book to multitudes. Why? Several reasons. The fact of the matter is that many people simply cannot read. And so the Bible, along with other books, is closed to them. Then too, many people have no interest in spiritual things and so they never look at the Bible. But when some people do get into the Bible, they discover that the Bible speaks to their inner most thoughts and intentions. “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). And the very fact that the Bible can cut deeply into our souls actually scares a lot of people.

You see, fallen human nature thinks it is a sin to get caught. When the House banking scandal was breaking, many congressmen denied any part in it. Cashing bad checks was not a problem. Getting caught was. But when the Bible judges our thoughts and intentions, it is not setting us up for this kind of fall. The Bible is pointing out that our sin is the real problem. Getting caught is minor. God already knows the thought of our hearts. And when we grasp the real nature of our thoughts and intentions, we see our need of the savior, Jesus Christ.

And so when the Bible cuts deeply, it is for the purpose of exposing us to ourselves and showing us our real need of forgiveness. Then, when we see our need of Jesus Christ we are more likely to flee to Him for salvation from sin.
