“Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
Teach me your paths.”

Prophetic Authority

A basic form of rebellion in any society, including our own, is rebellion against authority. The 1960s were a particular period of revolt against all types of authority – from the authority of parents to the authority of government. Today, while there is massive distrust of authority, many individuals set themselves up as their own authorities. Whatever they believe is right or wrong is right or wrong for them.

This goes to show that we need some form of authority. We need guidelines for living; we need to know what is right and what is wrong. God is the ultimate authority who has the wisdom and power to tell us what is right and wrong. He sent his son, the Lord Jesus Christ into the world to explain his will to us. Yes, Jesus Christ came into the world to be our prophet – to tell us the will of God for our salvation.

Now don’t start talking about that salvation stuff. I don’t need salvation. That’s where you are wrong. If you reject the authority of God over your life, you are in rebellion against God. You need salvation. You need the great prophet of God, the Lord Jesus Christ. You don’t need other so-called prophets who don’t really have authority. You need to listen to Jesus Christ. Long ago, the multitudes were amazed at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one having authority (Matthew 7:28-29). Christ speaks with authority today too. First, he speaks from the pages of the Bible. Second, he opens peoples’ hearts to understand the message of the Bible. In this way, Christ reveals God’s will to us. Isn’t it time that you understood God’s will for you.
