In these days of enormous scientific achievement, there are those who turn away from the God of the Bible. “Science is our Savior,” they say. “Science will solve our ultimate problems.” Then there are those who think government is our Messiah. “Let government tackle our problems. It will save us and take care of us!” And again, little attention is given to the God of the Bible.
But can our deepest needs be met by further advancements in science? Can the longings of our hearts be satisfied by improved government? Not really. What human beings need more than anything else is a clear Word from God. After God created Adam and Eve, the very first thing He did was to speak to them. God gave Adam and Eve directions on how to live. He said, “Fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over every living thing that moves on the earth” (Genesis 1:28).
In other words, Adam and Eve were to build a culture and a society on the earth to the glory of God. And the rest of the Bible outlines in detail how Adam, Eve and their descendants were to live. Science and government have their place. But if you are really going to learn how to live, you must turn back to God and the directions He gives in the Bible.
