We all believe in giving people, especially children, a second chance. Why, what would life be like if we only had one opportunity to prove ourselves on the job or on the athletic field? Fewer jobs would be held. Fewer young men and women would compete on the athletic field.
Now we believe in the second chance because we are made in God’s image. You see, God always gives people room to turn back to Him and to accomplish the tasks He has given them. The classic example in the Bible is Jonah. When Jonah turned his back on God and ran away from Him, God didn’t say, “Sorry Jonah, you blew it. I’ll get someone else to do your job.” No, not at all!
In fact, the Bible is very clear. Listen, “The word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time” (Jonah 3:1). You see, God did not give up on Jonah. After He got Jonah’s attention, He came back to Jonah a second time. Jonah was given a second opportunity to fulfill God’s calling. This is an example of grace. It is God’s grace again coming to Jonah.
God deals with each of us in the same way. The Bible says, “The Lord is … patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). This is why God came to Jonah the second time. This is why God comes back to you again and again to extend the grace of His word. In fact this message is an extension of God’s grace. Through it He is once again calling you to follow Him. Jesus is saying, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Will you respond to the Word of the Lord once again coming to you?
