The late astronomer, Carl Sagan, popularized the theory of evolution through his book and television series COSMOS. And Dr. Sagan made this grand and sweeping statement in the introduction to his book: “The Cosmos is all that is or ever was or ever will be” (page 4). Now when you are awed by the immensity and the beauty of the universe, you tend to agree with this statement. And space missions taking pictures of Saturn and Neptune cause us to ask “Could there be anything quite so grand as our cosmos?”
Well, listen to what the Bible says, “‘I am the Alpha and the Omega,’ says the Lord God, ‘Who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty'” (Revelation 1:8). Here too is a grand declaration. The God of the Bible claims to have created the universe and everything in it.
So who is right? Was astronomer Carl Sagan correct when he said the universe was never created and has always existed? Or is the God of the Bible right when He says He has always existed and He created the universe?
Unfortunately, many people side exclusively with the theory of evolution. Why? It is not because the theory of evolution has been proved beyond a shadow of a doubt. In fact, the theory is now raising more questions than it answers. But these same people want to duck all responsibility to God. This is the real issue: an effort to escape from God, an effort to escape God’s definition of sin, an effort to escape the need of salvation through Jesus Christ.
